Food Around the World and Assignments for October 12

As we study culture, food is an important aspect.

Check out A Worldwide Day's Worth of Food from Time.  Based on the book, What I Eat by Menzel and D'Aluisio.

Here is an interesting article on what Americans can learn from other food cultures.    Please note the aspects of culture that are mentioned including the notion of America as a melting pot and "Food as Community."  Also, regional differences in food choices.  How are your food choices impacted by your culture?

CCTV is a News Agency from China.  As we study Cultural Geography we are trying to see how other countries view world events.

Shimon Peres passed away on Wednesday morning.  His life is an interesting example of several topics within Cultural Geography.  Please do some research on your own thinking about terms including: 

• Country, State, Nation
• Occupied Territories
• Settlements
• Migration
• Judaism
• Isreal 
• Isreali Palestinian Conflict

None of these videos are required.  Please work with your parents on what you watch, it is just a recommendation.  Your research can and should include other sources.

Make sure you have an understanding of Colonilization, Nationalism, Imperialism and the Cold War.  Please be familiar with the Potsdam Conference.





We will also be exploring the foods of some Asian countries, specifically Japan, China and Korea.

Cultural Geography Introduction

Welcome!

We will be exploring our world and thinking all the while!

Cultural Geography is a unique way to explore the world.  We may do some memorization, but that is not the point of our adventures.  We are wanting to learn how we all fit and interact on this globe.

In class last week we discussed culture and subculture as it related to homeschooling.  Homeschooling can be considered a subculture in the US, but we divided homeschooling into more specific subcultures.  See the list below, which includes "Field Trippers," "Organized," and "Anti-Social."

Culture was simply defined as a shared set of values.  We will expound on this in upcoming classes.

Two assignments were given:

1) Choose as subculture of homeschooling to investigate.  Be prepared to share with the class the positives and negatives of the subculture you chose.

2) Education is a way of transferring culture.  Look at your favorite country and the way their educational system is set up.  Be prepared to share your findings with the class.  Check into the way the country views homeschooling too.
